Nicholas Pooran of the West Indies made history by scoring 36 runs in a single over during a T20 World Cup Group C match against Afghanistan at the Daren Sammy Stadium in Gros Islet. This feat marks only the fifth time such a performance has been achieved in T20 cricket. Pooran, assisted by extras including five wides, four leg byes, and a no-ball, capitalized on Azmatullah Omarzai’s erratic bowling in the fourth over of the innings.

Omarzai’s over began with a six hit by Pooran and included a no-ball, five wides, and several boundaries, resulting in a total of 36 runs. This matched similar historic overs by Yuvraj Singh, Kieron Pollard, Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh, and Dipendra Singh Airee. The West Indies leveraged this momentum to achieve the highest powerplay score in T20 World Cup history at 92/1, breaking the previous record held by the Netherlands.

Pooran’s performance extended beyond this over, as he later hit Rashid Khan for 24 runs in an over, breaking Chris Gayle’s record for the most T20I sixes by a West Indian, reaching 128 sixes. Pooran also became the sixth batter to hit over 500 sixes in men’s T20 cricket, finishing with 98 runs off 53 balls before being run out. The West Indies posted a formidable total of 218/5 in 20 overs, with contributions from Johnson Charles, Shai Hope, and Rovman Powell.

Both teams advanced to the Super Eight stage of the tournament.
