Fishing and It’s Importance To Barbados

The marine environment plays a crucial economic role for small islands like Barbados, although this is not always reflected in GDP. Despite low seafood exports, fishing is vital for local food security, especially in seaside communities such as Oistins, Six Men’s, and Skeete’s Bay.

These communities have long relied on fishing for sustenance and employment, dating back to post-Emancipation when fishing became one of the first self-directed enterprises for free black people. Many of the enslaved Africans brought significant fishing skills to the island, contributing to the development of the sector.

Barbados’ fishing sector employs about 6,000 people, though past estimates were higher. The fishing fleet includes over 1,000 registered vessels of various types. Efforts to enhance the sector include plans for new jetties to support boat servicing and expand the ship chandlery business, as well as marinas to attract yachts.

Key fishing hubs in Barbados include Oistins, Skeete’s Bay, and Bridgetown Fisheries Complex, with the island being famous for its flying fish, a national delicacy. Flying fish are seasonal but are now frozen for year-round availability. Another notable delicacy is the sea-egg, though its harvesting is now regulated to prevent endangerment.

Fishing not only provides local food and employment but also attracts tourism through game fishing opportunities.
