A Guide to Government Services in Barbados: What You Need to Know
Living in or visiting Barbados means you’ll eventually need to interact with government services. Here’s a roadmap to help you navigate the system.
Immigration and Border Control handles everything to do with entering and staying in Barbados — travel permits, work visas, residency permits, and passports. If you’re planning to work here or stay beyond a tourist visit, Immigration is your first stop. The main office is in Bridgetown, and they’ve increasingly moved to online portals.
The Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) handles personal income tax, VAT, and property tax. Self-employed individuals and business owners interact directly with BRA. They offer online tax filing and payment through their portal.
The Land Registry records all property ownership and transactions — a crucial stop in real estate dealings. The Transport Board regulates public transportation, vehicle licenses, and permits. They offer online services for renewing vehicle permits and licenses.
The National Insurance Scheme (NIS) is Barbados’ social security system, providing pensions, unemployment benefits, and sickness benefits. The Barbados Water Authority supplies the island with water — if you’re settling in, you’ll need to establish an account.
The Health Services handle public healthcare, with subsidised or free access through public clinics and hospitals. The Ministry of Social Care oversees welfare programmes, community support, and public assistance.
Most departments now have websites with online portals. Approach interactions with patience — Barbadian bureaucracy moves at its own pace, but Bajans are generally helpful and willing to guide you through the process.
Pro tip: visit government offices early in the morning, bring multiple forms of ID, and ask staff what additional documents you might need.
